Reflection on the Podcast, season 3, episode 16 😃

Hello everyone 💗

Today I'll make a reflecetion based on the podcast "TTELT", season 3, episode 16 " Learning English via Social Networking".

https://youtu.be/NFQlHBtOqoA

Nguyen Thanh Binh, an english teacher in Vietnam shared some techniques on "How To Learn English via Social Networking".
He has mentioned some tips how to make students practice their english by using social networks. For more, please read below.

Teacher Nguyen Thanh Binh starts his speech by saying that nowadays everybody has a phone, social medias and internet. These tools should be used effectively in order to help students learn faster and practice their skills. We are living in the technological age so, we must know how to grab the opportunity to make progress.

He lists some steps how students can make use of the technological tools in order to expand their knowledge:

• Students should identify their interesting topics, such as: sports, news, politics etc.

• By identifying the topics that they like the most, they are more likely to feel motivated to learn about these topics. Example: if a student likes sports, he/she can click on pages or forums and follow them in order to have more information about it.

• These forums or football players often update their information and students must have something called "conscious learning"; to learn for a purpose.

According to Nguyen Binh, there are some benefits of using social networks in the learning process:

• Through social sites, students can practice their communication skills.

• They can learn writing and listening as well. When students are exposed to a foreign language, they tend to learn it faster and easier than those who aren't exposed.

• Students can expand their vocabulary and speaking skills by watching videos.

Besides benefits of using social networks as a way to learn, teacher Nguyen Binh mentioned some mistakes that often students do while using technology.

• Reading for fun and not with a purpose. Which means that most of the time students read unnecessary things rather than things that can be useful in the future.

• Students may get distracted from disturbing sites.

• They may come across false information.

😃 I found this video really helpful because it has included everything such as: techniques of using social medias as a way to learn, benefits and disadvantages of using technology in the teaching process.

The title of the video was really interesting and catch my attention due to the fact that as a future teacher, I want to use technology in my class. The video reminded me of the benefits and disadvantages of technology as well. I totally agree with everything that the teacher on that video mentioned.

As a future teacher, I will make sure to technology as a strategy to help my students learn faster. For example: as the teacher mentioned, most of the time students come across false information while checking information for assignments or projects. A way to avoid that may be the use of webquests. The webquest allows the teacher to put the necessary information that students may need in order to complete the tasks given. That means that the information is not false and students learn new information from a reliable source.

Another way may be showing useful vidoes and photos to my students. Videos must be interesting and eye-catching. Beside that, they must include necessary information that my students may need. These strategies can bring innovation and make the teaching process more effective.

Thank you for your attention!
